Ear surgery, or otoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure to improve the appearance of the ears. Otoplasty can improve oversized or protruding ears, correct an inherited trait, resolve damage from trauma, and improve and repair stretched or ripped earlobes.

Ear surgery, or otoplasty, can repair virtually any cosmetic defect with your ears, including:

  • Oversized or protruding ears
  • Lop ear (top of the ear folds downward or inward)
  • Asymmetrical ears
  • Large, stretched or torn earlobes
  • Earlobes with large creases and wrinkles

You might be a candidate if:

  • You are not pregnant or nursing.
  • You do not have a pre-existing medical condition that makes the procedure dangerous.
  • You are not a smoker.
  • Your ear surgery is custom-tailored, and the techniques employed will depend entirely on your unique aesthetic situation.
  • Earlobe surgeries are often done in the office under local anesthesia with minimal recovery.
  • Ear pinning or surgery to correct prominent ears generally takes 2-3 hours. It can be done under local or general anesthesia and is done as an outpatient, allowing you to recover in the comfort of your own home.
  • Most patients return to work and social activities within five to seven days and can resume full activities (such as swimming and vigorous exercise) within four to eight weeks.
