Learn More About Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia, or male breast reduction surgery, is the surgical procedure used to decrease enlarged breasts that sometimes occur in men. Men are often embarrassed by an excess of breast tissue or fat. The condition can result from hormonal changes, weight, genetics, or a side effect of certain medications. Up to 40-60% of men can experience gynecomastia at some point in their life.

  • Gynecomastia is a medical term for a condition in which an excess of breast tissue develops in men. The over-development leads to an excess of localized fat or glandular tissue. It may affect one or both breasts. Gynecomastia surgery removes the excess tissue, fat, and skin to create a sculpted, masculine upper chest.
  • Many factors can cause gynecomastia, including hormonal changes with puberty or aging, certain prescription medications, recreational drugs such as marijuana or anabolic steroids, or medical conditions.

Surgery for gynecomastia may include liposuction, excision of tissue and skin, or both depending on your unique anatomy. Dr. Zaluzec will perform a thorough exam and discuss which options are best.

  • Gynecomastia surgery is performed on an outpatient basis, allowing you to recover in the comfort of your own home.
  • Dr. Zaluzec and her team will be available to you throughout your recovery. You can expect to be seen one to three days after surgery to ensure your recovery is smooth and successful.
  • In the early stages of recovery, you will have pain medication to help limit discomfort and you will wear a compression garment to help decrease swelling after surgery.
  • You may be able to return to work or other obligations after three to four days, but many patients plan for a week off. You can expect to recover fully after four to six weeks, returning to your everyday activities, including vigorous workouts, exercise, biking, running, or sport.

You are a good candidate for gynecomastia surgery if:

  • You are in overall good health and have ruled out any other medical reasons for gynecomastia.
    • Dr. Zaluzec can help and will refer to specialists if needed.
  • You are a non-smoker.
  • You are at a healthy and stable weight.
  • You do not have medical conditions or take medications that can inhibit recovery.
