Blepharoplasty, also known as eyelid surgery, is a surgical procedure that improves the upper and lower eyelids' appearance by tightening muscles and tissue or removing excess fat and skin. This procedure can be performed on men and women alike and offers a younger, more refreshed appearance.

Eyelid surgery can be a cosmetic or functional procedure:

Cosmetic Blepharoplasty

  • Cosmetic eyelid surgery can be done on either the upper or lower eyelids by removing skin or fat to create a more youthful appearance

Functional eyelid surgery - when your eyelids are affecting your vision

  • If excess drooping skin on your eyelids is affecting your vision, eyelids surgery can be life-changing. Not only will your peripheral vision be restored, but you will also look and feel younger.

Eyelid surgery is ideal for almost anyone who suffers from droopy, saggy eyelids. While we always require an in-person consultation to determine candidacy, you may want to wait if:

  • You have an existing medical condition that could adversely affect the healing process
  • You are on blood thinners
  • Have a history of very dry eyes
  • Are a current smoker

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, usually performed under local anesthesia or IV sedation. It can take from one to three hours.

After the eyelid surgery procedure, Dr. Zaluzec may recommend applying lubricating ointment and cold compresses to help aid the healing process and minimize side effects such as swelling, bruising, irritation or dry eyes.

Bruising and swelling are very common after eyelid surgery. Most patients can return to work within seven days, although bruising usually takes one to three weeks to fade (this is commonly referred to as “social downtime”). Strenuous activities should be avoided for at least three to four weeks.
