An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure performed to remove excess fat and skin from the upper arms to give them a more toned, slimmer appearance. Over time, the soft tissue in the upper arm becomes lax and may begin to sag, resulting in upper-arm skin that appears to hang. Some patients experience this with aging, while others have excess skin after weight loss. An arm lift will restore a firm, fit look to the upper arms.

There are two types of arm lifts, a consultation will determine which technique is right for you and your specific goals.

  • Mini arm lift: A mini arm lift involves placing an incision in the underarm, through which excess fat and skin are removed. This approach is appropriate when the loose skin and tissue are primarily in the armpit and the uppermost section of the arms.
  • Full arm lift: A full arm lift involves placing incisions along the underside of your arms, from armpit to elbow. A full arm lift is the appropriate surgical technique if you have a substantial quantity of loose skin and fat.

You are a good candidate for arm lift surgery if:

  • You have been struggling with excess fat and skin laxity despite diet and exercise.
  • You have maintained a stable weight and have realistic expectations for surgery.
  • You should be close to your desired weight to achieve the best results.
  • You should be in good health and a non-smoker.
  • Dr. Zaluzec will see you at several follow-up appointments and will be closely monitoring your progress. You will be fitted with a custom compression garment to help with swelling.
  • Arm lift surgery is an outpatient procedure. Once the operation is complete, you can return home to rest and heal. You will likely experience some swelling and bruising and mild discomfort that can be managed with pain medications. Occasionally, drainage tubes are needed to help collect excess fluid after surgery. You must avoid lifting your arms above your shoulder level for three to four weeks, or any physical motions that could put stress on the incisions.
  • The results of an arm lift are visible right away but will continue to improve as swelling and bruising subsides, which usually takes two to three weeks. Scars will fade and appear less noticeable over time.
